This animation is inspired by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche’s book “the Birth of Tragedy” and specifically his ideas on Apollo and Dionysus; Apollo is the God of reason and rationality of the intellect and thought, while Dionysus is the god of the irrational and chaos of emotions and instincts. Nietzsche establishes his aesthetics theories from the archetypes of Apollo and Dionysus and offers specifically that art is based on polarities and tension rather than delight and imitation. His polarities are those of order ‘Apollo’ and passion ‘Dionysus’. The main character in this animation is a sculptress who travels through Apollonian and Dionysian states. In this journey her art evolves along with her personality.

Meltem Şahin (TR)
Meltem Şahin is an illustrator/animator and recipient of Fulbright Scholarship from Marmaris, a small sea town in Turkey. She studied Graphic Design in Ankara, Turkey and graduated with an MFA in Illustration Practice from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). In 2013, her work has been chosen for one of the most important international events dedicated to the children’s publishing, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair’s annual book. In 2015, she has been awarded with MICA Graduate Research Development Grant to go further on her projects that incorporate electronics and Arduino. The book that she illustrated lastly, P is for Pussy, got successful media appearances including Huffington Post, Bitch Media, DesignTAXI and BuzzFeed. Recently her animation “Flow” has received an “Excellence in 2D Animation” award at MICA Animation Festival and screened at several different festivals.
