SENSE OF SMELL

#Workshops (Adults)
Sun.21 / 14:00 - 18:00
4th Floor

The workshop sense of smell by the olfactory artist Klara Ravat focuses on our unique organ, the nose. The sense of smell is a crucial function of the human body. It warns us for potential dangers in our direct environment and has a crucial role in our experience of space and our relation to others. Smell affects human behaviour, perception of time, memories, emotions and influences decision making. There are many possibilities to use smell as a powerful medium and tool in art, design and science. In relation to the festival theme: the sense of smell is something we can’t avoid; it’s there, it’s everywhere. Or it is not? During the quick advancement of the digital revolution smell has been forgotten, denied and placed a part as an animalistic act. However, smelling can provide us with more information about our environment than any digitalized apparatus. It might be the time to build a postfuture where we reconsider smelling and we take advantage of all its possibilities. In this 1-day workshop, participants will get an introduction about smell, how it works, what’s been done in the olfactory art realm until the moment, and will learn how to obtain an extract from an organic material. Participants will also be able to take a sample of the distilled scent home.
